1. Bergen, Norway
Why We Love It
Which country in Europe is best to visit in winter? Bergen is one of our favorites! Winter is like stepping into a real-life snow globe. With snow-covered peaks and those cute little wooden houses, it’s made for romance. Plus, it’s quieter, slower, and perfect for bundling up and exploring together.
Must-Know Tips for a romantic European getaway in winter
Where to Stay: For a luxurious stay, consider either Bergen Børs Hotel or Opus XVI. Bergen Børs Hotel offers a chic, contemporary design in a historic setting—perfect for a cozy yet stylish escape, and was featured on the Michelin Hotel Guide Hotel. Meanwhile Opus XVI has that classic, romantic vibe with plenty of Norwegian character, located right in the heart of the city, so you don’t have to trek far to see all the sights—ideal when it’s chilly outside!
What to Do: Take the Fløibanen funicular up to Mount Fløyen for those stunning views. Go early in the morning for a moment just for the two of you—no crowds, just that panoramic winter wonderland.Pro Tip: Don’t forget your fluffiest clothes. Winter here is seriously cold, but warming up with hot cocoa at Det Lille Kaffekompaniet (hidden just off the main drag) makes it worth it.
2. Venice, Italy
Why We Love It:
Venice in winter is the ultimate escape for a romantic European getaway in winter. No summer crowds, just misty canals, empty streets, and all the time in the world to get lost. You’ll feel like you have the whole city to yourselves.
Must-Know Tips for a Romantic Stay
Where to Stay: If you want luxury, and I mean luxury with a capital L, Ca’ Sagredo Hotel is perfect—right on the Grand Canal, with enough of an opulent feel to make you feel like royalty.
What to Do: Get lost. Seriously, put away the map and just wander. Venice in winter is magical with fewer people around. If you're there during Carnival, it’s like a fairytale with those gorgeous costumes and masks everywhere.
Pro Tip: Stick to the city in winter—places like Murano and Burano (with all the colored buildings) are mostly closed this time of year, so focus on Venice itself and soak in that quiet, misty charm.
3. Tallinn, Estonia
Why We Love Tallinn for a romantic European getaway in winter
Tallinn is a total hidden gem in winter. With its snow-covered cobblestones, medieval castles, and an Old Town that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale (literally). Not enough people know about it, and that makes it all the more special. Tallinn would also make a great honeymoon designation! Wherever you choose to go, we have you covered with how to find a romantic hotel.
4. Edinburgh, Scotland
Why We Love It:
Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities year-round, but winter here? It’s got that extra sparkle. When we were thinking what is the most romantic place in Europe, Edinburgh was a must visit! Between the Hogmanay celebrations, cozy whisky bars, and café culture, it’s the perfect romantic winter escape.
Must-Know Tips for a Romantic Stay
Where to Stay: You can’t go wrong with The Balmoral Hotel—it’s classic, it’s iconic, and the views of Edinburgh Castle are next-level. You’ll feel like you’re part of the city’s history. If you’re looking for something a bit more contemporary but still in the city center, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh is a fantastic option. It's eclectic, modern, and right in the heart of the action, with all the fun little touches that make it unique.
What to Do: Stroll through Princes Street Gardens in the morning when it’s quiet. We love the guide that Everything Edinburgh put together, there is so much to explore!
Escape the cold and explore The National Museum of Scotland and later warm up with a whisky at The Devil’s Advocate. It’s tucked away down one of those hidden alleys, and the vibe is on point.
Pro Tip: Edinburgh’s cafés are a must. Milkman on Cockburn Street is one of my favorites for people-watching, while Hideout Café has a little nook that’s perfect for cuddling up and escaping the cold. If you’re in Leith, Lola Café or Twelve Triangles are the go-to spots—cozy and full of character.
5. Stockholm, Sweden
Why We Love It
Stockholm in winter just works. It’s all about Christmas markets, candlelit cafés, and, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights. The city feels like a mix of old-world charm and modern romance, especially when you’re wrapped up in a blanket with a coffee in hand.
Must-Know Tips for Your Romantic European Getaway in Winter
Where to Stay: Ett Hem is exactly what it sounds like—a home away from home but make it luxury. Think cozy fireplaces, incredible food, and all the comfort you need. We aren’t the only ones who are obsessed with Ett Hem. The Standard included them in their post Christmas Holiday stay list, pointing out their Pilates studio.
What to Do: Dive into fika culture—essentially, it’s coffee and cake, but it’s also a whole mood. Find a café in Gamla Stan (the Old Town) and just enjoy some slow, cozy time together.
Pro Tip: January and February are perfect if you want to see Stockholm covered in snow—and maybe even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Plus, fewer crowds mean more space for romantic moments.
6. London, England
Why We Love It
London in winter is classic, timeless, and full of charm. Picture Georgian townhouses lit up for Christmas, the romance of Dickensian markets, and the cozy glow of a British pub. Even after the holidays, the city keeps that magic alive. Make it a multi city affair! As one of the most accessible airports, London should see your Europe itinerary.
